Seventh Annual Grumpy Troll Challenge – May 9th, 2015

mhbgThe Grumpy Troll Brew Pub and the Madison Homebrewers and Tasters Guild are pleased to announce the Seventh Annual Grumpy Troll Challenge on May 9th, 2015. The contest is a challenge to Homebrewers to submit their best beers to be judged by BJCP standards. Submissions will be accepted from amateur brewers only!

Two of the beers selected for the Best of Show round, as chosen by the Grumpy Troll owners and Brewmaster will get the opportunity to brew their recipe with Grumpy Troll Brewmaster Mark Knoebl.

Entrants must be willing/able to participate in the brewing process for at least one day (Brewmaster Knoebl will work with you to find a date to brew).

Beers eligible for submission are: BJCP Categories 1-16 and 18-23. In the categories where this is acceptable, please no use of brettanomyces, pediococcus or lactobacillus in styles where they are appropriate. Due to Brewery Sanitation concerns, no Sour Beers will be accepted. To ensure your beer is properly judged, if you are entering category 16E, 20,21, 22B, 22C or 23 please review the special instructions in the BJCP guidelines for these styles (you must designate a base beer style, new style formed, etc. depending on the category entered). No brettanomyces, pediococcus or lactobacillus can be used in these categories, even where it is BJCP appropriate.

Submitted beers cannot require a maturation time of more than six months or the cost of $10 per five gallon batch for specialty ingredients such as fruit, herbs, spices, vegetables and other, (not including hops, malt and yeast).

Procedures and the ingredients are subject to change for all winning beers based on availability and the production boundaries of the brewery.

For each entry, the brewer must submit:

  1. Three 12 oz bottles of beer or one 22 oz or 750 ml bottle and one 12 oz or larger bottle.
  2. Attach bottle identification forms to each bottle with a rubber band.
  3. Bottles and caps should have no labels or identifying marks. Soft drink or other printed crown caps are acceptable if the caps have been blacked out.

  6. You do not need to print out the recipe sheet or entry sheet.
  7. Only one entry per brewer, per subcategory is allowed.

The preferred entry submission location is the Grumpy Troll Brew Pub (Shipping Address:105 S. Second Street, Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin 53572) between Friday, April 17th 2015 and Sunday, May 3rd, 2015.
